Matthijs brings eight years of capital markets and advisory experience shaped across four of the world’s major financial hubs — Amsterdam, London, Paris, and New York City. His career began in banking, joining ING’s graduate scheme in 2018 after completing capital markets internships at ABN AMRO in both Amsterdam and London. That early international exposure didn’t just broaden his geography; it shaped how he thinks about markets, risk, and the cultural nuance behind capital decisions.

During his time at ING, Matthijs worked across Corporate Finance, Capital Markets, and M&A advisory, before moving into the TMT Sector Coverage team in Amsterdam. There, he focused on originating, structuring, and executing complex financing solutions for TMT clients across EMEA, with a strong emphasis on digital infrastructure — a sector that continues to redefine how businesses and consumers operate globally. His work regularly connected European platforms with U.S.-based investors and sponsors, particularly during his time working with ING’s Americas team in New York in 2024.

Promoted early to Vice President, Matthijs shifted his focus increasingly toward origination — building relationships, shaping financing strategies, and aligning sponsors with the right capital structures. Over the course of his career, he has completed several multi-million advisory and financing transactions across Europe, the United States, and the Middle East. Whether working with strategic buyers, family offices, or major U.S. investors, his approach has remained consistent: structure the right solution, set expectations clearly, and deliver without surprises.

A graduate of the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University, with a Master’s in Business Administration, Matthijs specialises in Debt Advisory, Project Finance, Corporate Finance, and Leveraged Finance. His early inspiration for finance dates back to age sixteen, when he worked for a debt aggregator in the Netherlands — an experience that sparked his interest in how capital structures influence business outcomes.

At Fuse Capital Group, Matthijs is focused on building the firm’s presence across the Benelux and wider European markets. As the first person on the ground in the region, he is driven by the opportunity to connect SMEs and their sponsors to a broader universe of capital providers — a market he believes remains significantly underdeveloped compared to the U.S. His ambition over the coming years is clear: to become one of the leading SME debt advisors in continental Europe while contributing to the growth of both a strong local footprint and a truly global platform.

Colleagues would describe him as outcome-focused — a mindset shaped early in his career when a senior colleague told him that the only thing that mattered was simple: “You get it done.” That philosophy continues to guide how he operates. Finance, in his view, is about eliminating uncertainty, managing expectations early, and delivering ahead of deadlines.

Outside of work, Matthijs is a committed sports enthusiast. He spends his time running, playing golf and racket sports, following Ajax Amsterdam at the stadium, and travelling with his fiancée and their dog. Before entering finance, he worked as a cocktail shaker at events — proof that composure under pressure and performance in front of a crowd were learned long before boardrooms and investment committees. If not in finance, he would likely have pursued a role within the sports industry — combining competition, performance, and strategy in a different arena.

His approach to both work and growth is direct and energetic: Let’s do this.
